Illinois Governor Going to Funeral of Hirohito

CHICAGO —
Gov. James R. Thompson said Monday that he plans to attend the funeral of Japan’s Emperor Hirohito on Feb. 24 as a good-will gesture toward a nation with strong economic ties to Illinois. Thompson, when touring a Motorola Inc. factory in west suburban Schaumburg, told reporters that his attendance at the funeral would acknowledge the state’s appreciation of its trade with Japan.
