Americans by the millions were laughing at the very different TV families of Bill Cosby and Roseanne Barr last week. Ratings released Tuesday by the A.C. Nielsen Co. showed that “The Cosby Show” had an audience of about 24.4 million homes, while “Roseanne” was seen in about 22.4 million. NBC handily won the network race, with CBS second and ABC third. The full list of ratings is on Page 9.

* Talk about a depressing first week on the air: ABC’s “Studio 5B” got off to a decent start in a preview telecast on Tuesday, attracting viewers in about 12 million homes. But when the series moved into its regular time slot at 8 p.m. Sunday, only about 5.2 million of them returned. Fox’s “America’s Most Wanted” and “Married . . . With Children” had nearly twice as many viewers in the same time period.
