Oliver L. North, squeezing in a speaking appearance before appearing in court, urged a religious group today to “remember the past” before embracing Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

North delivered a hard-line anti-communist speech less than an hour before the second day of his Iran-Contra trial. He said he has “watched in absolute amazement” as politicians, the media and intellectual leaders praised Gorbachev’s reforms.

“Until we see real changes, we must be wary of what is taking place” in the Soviet Union, North told a packed audience at a downtown hotel.
