‘Young Guns’ Shoots Down Its Rivals

Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

The latest battle for the No. 1 position on the Billboard magazine rental chart was won by “Young Guns,” the grisly Brat Pack Western, which booted out “Three Men and a Baby” and ran over second-place “Red Heat.” A strong challenger for the top spot is “The Dead Pool,” the latest Dirty Harry saga starring Clint Eastwood, which debuted at No. 39. More than 500,000 copies of Michael Jackson’s “Moonwalker” have been sold to retailers and distributors but that’s only good enough for No. 2 on the sales chart. “E.T.” is still No. 1.

* Critics trampled “The Great Outdoors,” but comedy stars Dan Aykroyd and John Candy have a huge following of renters who apparently don’t care about bad reviews. After two weeks, “The Great Outdoors” is No. 6.
