Local News in Brief : Signs Must Have Translations

Share

Saying it wants to make business signs understandable to police and firefighters, the Torrance City Council unanimously voted to require all foreign language signs to prominently display an English translation.

The action taken Tuesday night amends the city’s sign law, requiring the English language translation to appear on top of the foreign language, in as large or larger letters. The amendment takes effect March 1.

It says the translation must be readable from right to left, and requires that if there is only one sign, it shall be in English.

The request for the amendment was made by Councilman George Nakano, who said he has noticed many Asian language signs that did not include an English translation.

Violating the sign law is a misdemeanor and punishable by a fine of up to $500 and six months in jail.
