A U.S. official who visited Ferdinand E. Marcos in his Honolulu hospital room said the former Philippine president appears to be “gravely ill.” William Craig, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service district director, is the first U.S. official to acknowledge seeing Marcos since his latest hospitalization. “It’s fair to say that the reports previously in the news media that he was in critical condition are absolutely true,” Craig said. The 71-year-old exiled leader had a tracheotomy Wednesday to drain fluid from his lungs and has been breathing through a respirator since. He is listed in critical but stable condition.
