Countywide : Rail Corridor Agency Pact Will Be Signed
Three Orange County transportation commissioners will board an Amtrak train for Los Angeles this morning to sign a joint powers agreement creating the Los Angeles-San Diego Rail Corridor Agency.
The new agency, to be directed by officials of Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties, hopes to acquire railroad tracks and right of way from the Santa Fe Railway, which currently owns them, to establish regular commuter train service along the route.
The three commissioners participating in the document-signing will be Board of Supervisors Chairman Thomas F. Riley, attorney Dana Reed and Tustin City Councilman Richard B. Edgar.
Currently, Amtrak provides regional passenger service with several stops in each of the counties along the Santa Fe route. But federal law prohibits Amtrak from expanding in ways that would make it an intra-urban commuter service.
