Jewish Fund Drive $1 Million Over Goal
The Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles’ United Jewish Fund surpassed its fund-raising target by $1 million Sunday as more than 5,000 volunteer telephone solicitors received pledges for $4 million during the 12-hour campaign, council officials said.
Called “Super Sunday,” the campaign raised money to fund a broad range of health, education, welfare and social service programs in Los Angeles, Israel and other parts of the world.
Campaign officials said a “significant” amount of the money raised will be used to help pay resettlement costs for between 3,000 and 5,000 Soviet Jews expected to arrive in the Southland this year.
