A San Diego man who kept a police SWAT team at bay more than three hours Monday afternoon by locking himself in his home was arrested as he fled out the back door.

William McKinley, 41, was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

A police spokesman said McKinley returned to his home in the 2200 block of India Street Monday and confronted a cleaning woman inside. She told police that McKinley solicited her to commit a sex act and then brandished a knife when she refused. She told police she ran from the house after McKinley slashed at her with the knife, though she was not cut.

When police arrived, they discovered that McKinley had locked himself in the house. After trying unsuccessfully for more than three hours to talk him into coming out, SWAT team members, at 5:07 p.m., fired tear gas into the home.

McKinley ran out the back door, and police captured him in the back yard.
