More than 18 community colleges are expected to participate in the tournament, which is aimed at sharpening students’ skills for state and national contests to be held later in the year. The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. Friday and conclude at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Colleges in both Northern and Southern California will compete as well as schools from Washington, Utah and Arizona. Between 200 and 300 students are expected to compete.

The tournament is not restricted to speech majors, said Mary Lewis, a director in the Cerritos College forensic department. “We draw from all majors. Being able to speak in an organized and intelligent manner will help you no matter what major you are,” Lewis said.

Individual and team trophies will be awarded to winners and runners-up at the conclusion of the competition.
