INTERCOUNTY TRAFFIC VOLUME

The Southern California Assn. of Governments, a six-county regional planning agency, has proposed its own “preferred strategy” for reducing air pollution and the expected growth in traffic congestion. SCAG’s plan includes mandatory ride-sharing, flexible work hours, shifts of some future jobs to Riverside and San Bernardino counties, construction of new highways and widening existing freeways, growth management, increased use of buses and trains, and synchronized traffic signals. If enacted, regional traffic congestion could be reduced to 1984 levels, say SCAG officials.
