Golden West College instructor Harvey Clemans has been named the 1988/89 Outstanding Artist, an honor awarded by the city’s Allied Arts Board and the Arts Associates, a private organization of artists and patrons.

Clemans, a well-known art instructor at the community college since 1970, has also been selected to visit Anjo, Japan, Huntington Beach’s sister city.

Clemans will stay for a week at the home of a Japanese art patron in Anjo this August, offering demonstrations in watercolor to his hosts, according to Michael Mudd, Huntington Beach’s cultural affairs manager.

Clemans’ paintings, which are watercolors reflecting “natural and man-made beauty of the coastal United States,” will be exhibited in Japan during the summer, said Ann Thorn, the city’s arts coordinator.

The Anjo Sister City Artist Exchange Program is a joint effort by the Anjo and Huntington Beach sister city organizations and the Arts Associates.

Exchanging art with Anjo has been done for some time, Mudd said, but the exchange of artists is fairly recent.

“It’s a terrific opportunity for an artist who wants to go around the world with his work,” Mudd added.

Clemans’ “gentle approach to teaching allows students the confidence to explore their creative potential,” Thorn said.
