Noting that “it’s my job to see that Democrats are elected at all levels,” new Party Chairman Ron Brown discussed mayoral contests during questioning on NBC’s “Meet the Press”. He appeared to resign himself to supporting Edward I. Koch for reelection as mayor of New York if Kock wins his party’s nomination, but sounded as if he would encourage the Rev. Jesse Jackson to run for mayor of Washington if Marion Barry decided not to seek another term. Koch and Jackson have often clashed in the past. Brown said he would support Richard M. Daley for mayor of Chicago if Daley is the Democratic nominee even if, as appears likely, a black Democrat runs on an independent ticket against Daley. All three mayoral contests have heavy racial overtones.
