Memphis is out to roll past Cleveland in the race to build the first rock ‘n’ roll museum. If the developer’s plans are approved by city officials and construction moves as scheduled, the Memphis Pyramid entertainment and sports complex--which would house a hall devoted to rock memorabilia--would be finished by 1991. Promoters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland have raised $14 million of the $28 million local share of their museum, but it isn’t slated to open until 1992. Memphis, New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Los Angeles all competed to have the Hall of Fame built in their areas. Music museums are also planned by rock impresario Bill Graham in San Francisco and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in Atlanta.
