Tennis Roundup : Unseeded Camporese Upsets Mecir in Opening Round

Unheralded Italian Omar Camporese upset second-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 7-6, Tuesday in the opening round of the $492,500 Stella Artois indoor tournament at Milan, Italy.

Mecir, 24, who reached the final of the Australian Open at Melbourne last month, couldn’t handle the powerful serve of Camporese, a wild-card entry who is ranked 204th in the world.

In another surprise, Soviet qualifier Andrei Cherkasov eliminated seventh-seeded Henri Leconte of France, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

Fourth-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland beat Marco Ostoja of Yugoslavia, 7-6, 6-1.

Monica Seles of Yugoslavia surprised seventh-seeded Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union, 6-0, 6-2, to advance to the second round of the $300,000 Virginia Slims of Washington at Fairfax, Va.

Steffi Graf surrendered only five points on her serve in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Stacey Martin, a University of Tennessee freshman. Graf, the world’s top-ranked player, needed only 39 minutes to win.

Third-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria topped Czechoslovakia’s Andrea Holikova, 6-2, 6-4, and Carling Bassett-Seguso of Canada returned from a three-month hiatus to defeat Renata Baranski, 6-3, 6-1.

Fourth-seeded Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union ousted Camile Benjamin, 7-5, 6-1.

Ninth-seeded Amos Mansdorf of Israel came from behind to defeat Glenn Michibata of Canada, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, in a second-round match at the Volvo Indoor Tennis Championships at Memphis, Tenn.

Top-seeded Andre Agassi routed unseeded Jim Pugh, 6-2, 6-3. Sixth-seeded Brad Gilbert defeated Scott Davis, 6-2, 6-1, 11th-seeded Michael Chang beat Tom Nijssen of the Netherlands, 6-1, 6-3, and seventh-seeded Kevin Curren beat Richard Matuszewski, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
