UCLA Beats UC Irvine in Baseball

UCLA defeated UC Irvine, 6-3, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at UCLA.

Trailing, 1-0, in the bottom of the second inning, the Bruins scored two runs for a 2-1 lead. After Irvine took the lead, 3-2, with two runs in the fifth, UCLA took the lead for good, 4-3, in the bottom half of the inning.

Scott Cline homered for UCLA. John Sutherland (1-0) got the victory in relief and Mike Fyhrie picked up his second save of the season for the Bruins. Rob Johnson (0-1) took the loss for Irvine.

University of San Diego 9, Chapman 6--Rick Doane’s three singles highlighted a 12-hit San Diego attack as the Toreros (3-3) defeated visiting Chapman.

Pat Fitzsimons (2-0) pitched seven innings, allowing only one earned run. USD scored two runs in the first inning, allowing just one earned run.

USD scored two runs in the first inning, highlighted by Andy Roberts’ RBI double, and three more in the second to take a 5-1 lead.

Chapman got three hits and two RBIs from Mike Grahovac. David Bird (1-3) took the loss for Chapman (4-7).

In nonconference softball:

UC Santa Barbara 1-1, Chapman 0-0--Santa Barbara’s Andrea Serrano threw a four-hitter, striking out four, in the first game. Christy Smith threw a four-hitter, striking out two, in the second game. Chapman is 0-2.
