A Tijuana man suffered multiple puncture wounds from a police attack dog when he refused to come out of hiding after a car chase in the South Bay area, the San Diego Police Department reported Thursday.

About 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, a patrol officer stopped a vehicle at Interstate 805 and San Ysidro Boulevard, intending to cite the driver for a traffic violation. The driver, Jose Santos Guzman, 25, got out of the car and ran into a nearby thicket, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

The police dog was brought in. Officers issued a warning both in English and Spanish that the police dog would be sent into the brush if Guzman didn’t come out. When he ignored the command, the dog was set loose, Robinson said.

Guzman was taken to Chula Vista Community Hospital, where he was treated for multiple puncture wounds. He was booked into County Jail on suspicion of auto theft, Robinson said.
