A high-speed chase involving Carlsbad police, sheriff’s deputies, San Diego police and two alleged car thieves ended early Thursday in La Jolla when the stolen vehicle crashed into an embankment, the Carlsbad Police Department reported.

The chase, which at times exceeded 100 m.p.h., began about 5 a.m. on Elm Avenue when a Carlsbad officer stopped the driver of a late-model Dodge for a broken taillight. When the officer approached the car, the driver sped south on Interstate 5.

The officer fired a warning shot as the car sped away, a police spokesman said.

San Diego County sheriff’s deputies and San Diego police officers joined the chase, which ended when the suspects exited I-5 onto La Jolla Village Drive and careened off an embankment, the spokesman said. They were caught after a foot chase.
