College Roundup : Barrena Lifts Pierce to Win Over Mission

Freshman first baseman Robert Barrena was two for four and put Pierce College ahead to stay with a three-run home run in the fourth inning to lead the Brahmas to an 11-5 nonconference win over Mission at Pierce on Thursday.

Trailing, 4-2, in the fourth, Barrena’s first home run of the season gave Pierce (2-0) a 5-4 lead. The Brahmas added two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to put away Mission (0-5).

Freshman shortstop Bill Morris had a two-run triple in sixth for Pierce and teammate Kevin Johnson was three for three with a walk and scored two runs.

Pierce right-hander Bob LaRosa (1-0) pitched the last five innings to earn the win, allowing no runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked one. Tom Konkel had two doubles for Mission.

In other baseball games:

Pima (Ariz.) 8, Canyons 6--Canyons freshman pitcher Nick Lymberopoulos committed two errors in the sixth inning that led to four unearned runs in a Stengel tournament game at Rancho Santiago College in Santa Ana.

Canyons (2-3) held a 6-2 lead entering the sixth. Peter Washington was three for four with a run batted in for Canyons. Teammates Don Pedersen, Randy Cooper and Ernie Perez each had two hits.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Santa Barbara d. Cal State Northridge, 15-17, 8-15, 15-6, 15-6, 15-6--Northridge had a 3-1 lead in the third game, but UC Santa Barbara--ranked No. 3 in the nation--turned the momentum around in time to take the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. game at UCSB.

Northridge also led, 6-4, in the final game, but UCSB reeled off 11 consecutive points. Senior outside hitter Bob Samuelson had a match-high 34 kills and a .426 hitting percentage for Northridge (0-5 in WIVA play) and teammate Neil Coffmann had 24 kills. UCSB improved to 6-2 in WIVA play.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 91, La Verne 77--Jeff Newton had a team-high 24 points and added 13 rebounds to lead Master’s in a nonconference game at Master’s. Jason Webster had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs (14-13) and teammate Tom Bruner had 18 points.

Master’s trailed, 42-41, at halftime but outscored La Verne (5-17), 50-35, in the second half.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Chapman 78, CSUN 69--Kim Rieff and Julie King each scored 20 points to lead Chapman in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at Chapman.

Chapman is 11-11, 7-3 and in second place in the CCAA. Northridge, ranked 16th in NCAA Division II, dropped to 17-7, 5-4 in conference games.

Julie Arlotto scored a game-high 21 points for Northridge.

Valley 90, Bakersfield 58--Freshman guard Christine Rumfola scored 14 points for Valley in the Western State Conference game at Valley. Ruth Aguilar added 12 points and 7 rebounds and Sandrine Rocher had 12 points and eight rebounds for Valley (27-3, 12-1). Tisa Rush added 12 points.

SOFTBALL

CS Northridge 2, Humboldt State 0--Debbie Dickmann struck out six and walked none for Northridge in pool play of the Chico tournament at Hooker Oak Park.

The shutout was the second in a row for Dickmann (3-2), who ran her scoreless inning streak to 20. Northridge (3-4) scored in the first when Leilani Artis scored on a wild pitch by Amy Circo. Northridge added a run in the third when Char Schmitt singled, Lisa Hall walked and Erin McGuire singled.

El Camino 6, Moorpark 3--El Camino jumped to a 6-0 lead in the nonconference game at Moorpark.

Moorpark (1-1) scored all its runs in the sixth. Rosa Jimenez doubled with one out, took third on Chris Singer’s single and scored on Missy Cress’ single. Singer went to second on Cress’ single and both runners advanced another base on a passed ball before Jamie McDaniel scored them with a double.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pierce 6, Moorpark 3--Pierce swept all six singles matches in the Western State Conference opener at Pierce. Steve Oliver, the state’s top-ranked junior college singles player, defeated Darin Pleasant, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 1 singles play and teammate Mark Nielsen defeated Andy Van Cott, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in No. 2 singles play.
