College Roundup : UC Irvine Teams Have Easy Time in Track Meets

UC Irvine’s men’s and women’s track and field teams scored easy victories over Cal State Long Beach and Cal Poly Pomona Saturday in a nonconference meet at Irvine.

Junior Mike Morales, a Garden Grove High School graduate, won the hammer throw (192 feet 6inches), the shotput (51-6) and the discus (168-9) to pace the Anteater men, who won the meet with 119.5 points. Long Beach was second with 43 points and Pomona third with 24 1/2.

Marc Goulet won the 800 meters (1:56.2) and the mile (4:15.9), and sophomore Matt Farmer won the long jump (22-11 1/2) and the high jump (6-6 3/4) to help Irvine (2-0).

In the women’s competition, Irvine won with 90 points, followed by Long Beach (28) and Pomona (18).

Trindl Fearnley won the javelin in the third-best throw in the school’s history (137-11), and ran the third leg on Irvine’s winning 4 x 400 meter relay. Junior Brigid Stirling helped Irvine with a victory in the 1,500 meters (4:38.3) and tied teammate Beth McGrann for first place in the 3,000 (9:59.2).

In a nonconference softball doubleheader:

Loyola Marymount 5-2, Southern California College 3-5--Kristin Heather gave up five hits through seven innings to lead Loyola Marymount (3-3) in the first game at SCC. In the second game, Suzie Hopkins (2-1) gave up seven hits in seven innings for SCC (2-3).

In men’s volleyball:

Hawaii 3, UC Irvine 0--Carlos Briceno had 17 kills and Allen Allen added 16 to lead visiting Hawaii, 15-9, 15-9, 15-10.

At the San Diego Intercollegiate men’s tennis tournament:

Olivier Amerlink and Michael Zuercher of Chapman College defeated Mark Dadin and Dan Mattera of the University of San Diego, 6-4, 6-3, in the semifinals, but the doubles team lost to Ken Thome and Larry Pearl of Rice, 6-4, 6-2, in the final.
