A Sutter County farmer fighting eviction from the land he has worked for 16 years says he believes supporters’ protests could help him keep the farm.

About 75 people attended a weekend rally near Bob Magill’s home here. The rally came after a protest by Magill and others outside the bank that foreclosed on the farm.

“I don’t know how long they will let us alone, but I think all the publicity has made some people step back,” Magill said.

Magill, 54, has been renting the farm since the Sacramento Valley Federal Land Bank Assn. foreclosed two years ago. Bank officials say a Rio Linda man bought the farm last fall and now wants to live there. But the Magill family claims the bank fraudulently sold the property.

The Magills were to be evicted last week, but Sheriff Roy Whiteaker said the family will be allowed to stay until questions about the farm’s ownership are cleared up.
