Plans for freer trade by 1992 within the European Community could hurt hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of Canadian exports, Donald MacDonald, Canada’s new high commissioner to Britain, said. Softwood lumber and life insurance are two items that particularly concern Canadian businesses and politicians, he said in a speech to the Mid-Atlantic Club in London, a group specializing in political and economic relations between North America and Europe. Macdonald, a prominent advocate of Canada-U.S. free trade and a former Liberal finance minister in the federal government, gave the private speech last week.
