IN BRIEF : West German Wins Cycle Race

Andreas Kappes of West Germany won the opening leg of the 47th international tour of Valencia province cycling race today after a strong final sprint with 20 other riders. Kappes covered the 116 miles around this eastern Spanish town in a time of 4 hours, 53 minutes and 50 seconds, at an average speed of 23.6 m.p.h. French rider Laurent Jalabert was second, followed by Remig Stumpf of West Germany and Miguel Indurain of Spain, all with the same time as the winner. A total of 128 riders divided in 16 teams from seven countries are taking part in the six-day 597-mile race.
