Canada’s Human Rights Commission ruled that women must be integrated into combat units of the Canadian armed forces “with all due speed.” The three-member tribunal ordered that “full integration is to take place with all due speed, as a matter of principle and as a matter of practice, for both active and reserve forces.” A Defense Department spokesman said there would be no comment until the 78-page judgment had been reviewed. If there is no appeal to the Federal Court within 10 days, the ruling has the force of law. Women now serve in non-combat roles and make up about 9% of the 85,000-member armed forces.
