The City of West Hollywood and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department have agreed to a recruitment plan that city officials hope will lead to the hiring of openly gay and lesbian sheriff deputies.

While the Sheriff’s Department will not specifically mention gays and lesbians in its recruiting efforts, the department will start holding entrance exams in the West Los Angeles area. According to the agreement, the city can advertise the regional tests in any manner it wishes.

West Hollywood Councilman Steven Schulte said after council members met with Sheriff Sherman Block, the agreement is “a step in the right direction.”
