College Gets New Head of Fund-Raising Group

Edith M. Fee, a Newport Beach resident and graduate of UC Irvine, has been named president of the Coastline Community College Foundation board of directors, a 27-member group that oversees major fund-raising efforts to develop the college.

Fee, a vice president of Avco Financial Services of Irvine, was named to the board last year and is actively involved with Coastline’s popular Conference for Women, serving as chair of the annual event.

“We’re fortunate, indeed, to have a person with (Fee’s) talent, energy and stature in the business community to provide the leadership that will enable us to achieve our goals,” said William M. Vega, Coastline College president.

Orange County students Cherryl Attix of Orange; Kimberly Bohman of Westminster; Jennifer Fulton of Santa Ana; Jill Holman and Suzanne Sarphie of Garden Grove; Jennifer Richard of Fullerton; Suzanne Rybak of La Habra Heights; Johanna Westerman of Newport Beach, and Stacey Willis of Huntington Beach were named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Scripps College in Claremont.

Don Jackson, an engineering technician at the Naval Weapons Station in Seal Beach, received the defense secretary’s award for productivity excellence at a ceremony in Washington. Jackson, a Rancho California resident, was honored for spearheading a project that eventually saved the Department of Defense $2.3 million by eliminating duplication of effort among the military services.

Petty Officer Barbara Comer, 24, a graduate of Edison High School and daughter of Deborah and William Comer of Huntington Beach, was presented a commendation for her “professionalism and initiative” as a member of a firefighting team that helped extinguish a fire aboard the aircraft carrier Constellation while on maneuvers in the Indian Ocean.

Veteran policeman Doug Coffing was honored as Police Officer of the Year by the Exchange Club of Irvine with a banquet attended by 350 persons at the Irvine Marriott Hotel.

Others honored were Irv Chase as Reserve Officer of the Year; Pam Colby for outstanding service; Suzanne Moore and Gerald Head, who were given the Specialized Service award; Lonnie Nelson, Victor Quiros and Greg Allen, who received the Field Service Division award, and Jim Bloomfield, who was given the Support Services Division award.

Awards for outstanding volunteer services were presented to Newport Beach area residents Jim de Boom, David Grant, Tom Deemer and H. Ross Miller by the Newport Beach Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission.

Robin Bein, 18, of Newport Beach, Nicole Fitch, 14, of Irvine, and Bethany Schramm, 16, of Mission Viejo, have been named regional semifinalists of Teen magazine’s 1989 Great Model Search.

Each has a chance in the yearlong program to appear on the cover of the magazine and win $10,000 in cash and modeling contracts with Maybelline and the Gillette Co., sponsors of the contest. Past winners include Cheryl Tiegs, Cristina Ferrare and Kelly Hamon.

Pictures of the three Orange County semifinalists will appear in the magazine’s March issue.

Anaheim Hills resident Leslie L. Richards, a member of the first graduating class of Foothill High School in Tustin and graduate of Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Long Beach, has been named assistant director of outpatient services at California Graduate Institute in Orange, a clinic that provides low-cost psychological counseling.
