THE COLLEGES : Community College Roundup : Golden West Goes on the Attack in 15-9 Victory

Golden West College got a season-high 19 hits to defeat Southwestern, 15-9, in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Golden West.

Josh Bammer and Shelby Hart hit solo home runs and Craig Paquette hit a two-run home run for Golden West.

David Turner relieved starter Todd Long in the second and went the rest of the way for the victory.

Bammer had three hits and two RBIs, Paquette had three hits and three RBIs, Dan Villigas had three hits and four RBIs and Steve McKowen had three hits for Golden West.

Hart had two hits and two RBIs, Robb Carabba had two hits and scored two runs and Frank Herman had two hits and two RBIs for Golden West, which scored in every inning except the first.

Southwestern is 6-7.

In the Cypress softball tournament:

Cypress 9, Ventura 0--Val Sucatre had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored for the Chargers in a game called after six innings because of a time limit at Arnold Park. Colleen Moore and Allyson Tatman combined for a two-hit shutout, with Moore getting the victory.

Alisha Bokano had three hits for the Chargers, who play San Diego City in a second-round game today at 10:45 a.m. at Arnold Park.

In South Coast Conference volleyball:

Golden West 3, Long Beach 1--Tim Johnson had 26 kills and Doug Partis had 16 kills in 19 attempts as the Rustlers won, 15-5, 10-15, 15-2, 15-7, at home. Golden West is 3-2. Long Beach is 3-2.

Orange Coast 3, El Camino 0--Brian Lewis had 15 kills, Dan Murray 13 and Scott Lindquest eight to lead host OCC to a 15-5, 15-10, 15-10 sweep at home. OCC is 4-1.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s track and field:

Orange Coast 113, Golden West 29--Charlie Tyler went 22-feet-10 to win the long jump for host OCC. Steve Hefferan won the javelin with a throw of 193-11 for Golden West. OCC won the women’s meet, 110-21.

Riverside 96, Saddleback 49--Steve Dougherty put the shot throw of 51-4 and Roberto Vasquez had a javelin throw of 200-7 for host Saddleback. Brian McClerry had a high jump of 6-6 for Saddleback.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Saddleback 8 1/2, Grossmont 1/2--Jamil Atcha won, 6-0, 6-0, and Dirk Baker won, 6-1, 6-2, in singles to lead host Saddleback (5-0). Ed Peregrino and Atcha won, 6-0, 6-2, in doubles for Saddleback.
