Museum Events for Children End Black History Month

Black History Month ends this weekend with several special children’s events planned at museums. Today, at the Long Beach Children’s Museum, youngsters will learn to make traditional African designs when artist Elliott Pinkney demonstrates silk-screening techniques in the museum’s Art Cafe.

The workshops, suitable for children 5 and older, will begin at 11:30 a.m. and 12:15, 1:30, 2:15 and 3 p.m. Reservations are advised. Smocks should be worn. The museum is at 445 Long Beach Blvd. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $2.50. Information: (213) 495-1163.

Sunday evening at the Craft and Folk Art Museum, 5814 Wilshire Blvd., Onochie Chukurah will entertain with African folk tales. An art activity is planned. Families may bring picnic dinners to the museum for an indoor picnic at 5:30 p.m. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are required: (213) 934-3082. Cost, including admission to the museum, is $4, $2 for children.

At the Los Angeles Children’s Museum, 310 N. Main St., the museum’s Children’s Chorus will present “Black History: A Celebration in Song” today and Sunday in the Louis B. Mayer Performance Space. Programs are at noon and 2 p.m. At 3:30 p.m. both days, museum staffers will lead youngsters in hand games, songs and rope jumping.

The museum’s “Ethnic Los Angeles” space continues its exhibit “From Africa to Los Angeles,” which depicts an African marketplace and a popular local nightclub of the 1940s. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends. Admission is $4. Information: (213) 687-8801.
