Torrance Schools’ Apartment Plans
What an amazing story in the South Bay edition (Times, Feb. 17): “Apartment Plans Divide City, School Officials.”
The Torrance Unified School District is going to borrow up to $13.5 million to get into the apartment business. And is at war, once again, with the city.
This, in a district that has refused to build school libraries for its (elementary school) children. With money in the bank from the sale of schools and more money available if the Columbia (School) site were sold, the district commits itself to debt to compete in the private sector, with taxpayers’ money.
In 1984 the county told Torrance to open school libraries. In 1987 State Supt. of Schools (Bill) Honig reported on the “Crisis in School Libraries.” Torrance denies access to books to children and instead--builds apartments!
