About 450 University of California and California State University students lobbied state legislators in Sacramento to reject a proposed 10% hike in student fees. The student representatives, in the state capital for a three-day conference, also held a rally to protest the fee increase proposed by Gov. George Deukmejian. “Unless the Legislature rejects this tax on students, many from economically disadvantaged backgrounds will be forced out of the system,” said Tracey Woodruff, president of the UC Student Assn. and a UC San Francisco graduate student. Deukmejian is seeking 10% fee increases for California residents and increases of up to 21% for out-of-state students.
