UCSD Splits Doubleheader

Freshman Denny Kubinski (1-0) allowed just two hits in six innings in his first collegiate start as UC San Diego defeated Southern California College, 7-2, in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader Saturday at Costa Mesa.

Southern California College won the opener, 5-4.

Gary Fessia was four for seven on the day, including a double and a triple in the second game, with four RBIs for UCSD (7-4). Dave Ligerman was three for six with two RBIs.

Mike Morgan (3-2) took the loss in the opener for UCSD.

Southern California College is 8-7.

U.S. International University (8-11) lost to host Cal State Northridge, 7-4. Scott Coutts had two hits, including a double for USIU. Cal State Northridge took a 6-1 lead in the third inning. USIU scored two runs in the seventh inning. USIU’s Mike Whisonant was the loser (2-4). Northridge is 11-2.

Point Loma Nazarene College split a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader with Westmont College in Santa Barbara, dropping the first game, 2-1, and winning the second, 11-4.

In the second game, Dave Pierce (3-2) was the winning pitcher. Bryan Tema went three for five with two RBIs and Craig Gastineau was three for six with three RBIs.

Mark Ratekin was charged with the loss in the first game.

Point Loma is 5-7 overall, 1-1 in conference play. Westmont is 7-7, 1-1.

GOLF

USIU’s Allison Shapcott is the leader after two rounds of the Josten’s-Patty Sheehan Invitational at the Fort Ord-Bayonet Course in Monterey.
