NHL Roundup : Oilers Beat Penguins for 6th Straight Win, 4-2

Esa Tikkanen scored two goals and Jimmy Carson added a goal and an assist as the Edmonton Oilers stretched their winning streak to six games with a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday night at Pittsburgh.

Goalie Grant Fuhr also won his sixth straight as the Oilers broke a second-place tie with the Kings in the Smythe Division. Fuhr lost his bid for a shutout when Kevin Stevens and Rob Brown scored in the final 2:08.

The Penguins, 1-6-2 in their last nine games, fell to third place in the Patrick Division, one point behind the Washington Capitals.

Tikkanen scored at 14:15 of the second period and added an empty-net goal with 19 seconds left.

Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux, the NHL’s leading scorer, was held without a point for the second consecutive game. The Penguins are 2-6 when Lemieux has been scoreless this season.

Quebec 8, Buffalo 2--Peter Stastny scored two goals and his brother, Anton Stastny, added three assists as the Nordiques routed the Sabres at Buffalo.

The victory completed weekend sweep for the Nordiques, who trounced the Sabres, 6-2, Saturday.

Hartford 3, Toronto 0--Peter Sidorkiewicz stopped 21 shots for his third shutout of the season as the Whalers beat the Maple Leafs at Hartford, Conn.

Ray Ferraro, Scott Young and Ron Francis scored for Hartford.

New York Islanders 4, Winnipeg 3--Alan Kerr scored two goals and assisted on another as the Islanders dealt a blow to the Jets’ fading playoff hopes at Winnipeg.

The Islanders, who snapped a seven-game winless streak, dropped Winnipeg 10 points behind the final playoff spot in the Smythe Division with 15 games left.

Boston 5, New York Rangers 0--Cam Neely and Bob Sweeney scored two goals apiece as Bruins’ goaltender Andy Moog continued his mastery over the Rangers at New York.

Moog, 7-1-2 lifetime against the Rangers, had 41 saves while recording the fifth shutout of his career as Boston ran its unbeaten streak to eight games.

New Jersey 2, Minnesota 0--Brendan Shanahan scored a goal and set up one by Doug Brown to back the shutout goaltending of Sean Burke, who stopped 30 shots as the Devils beat the North Stars at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Devils moved to within eight points of the final playoff spot the Patrick Division.

Washington 3, Vancouver 0--Goaltender Don Beaupre turned away 24 shots while blanking the Canucks and the Capitals moved past Pittsburgh into second place in the Patrick Division.

Kelly Miller, Neil Sheehy and Dave Christian scored the goals.

St. Louis 3, Chicago 3--Bernie Federko scored his second goal of the game at 4:53 of the third period to give the Blues a tie with the Blackhawks at Chicago.

The Blues, 5-0-1 in their last six games against Chicago, took sole possession of third place in the Norris Division.
