The man convicted of recklessly starting last September’s 49er forest fire in Nevada County was sentenced in Yuba City to three years in a state hospital. But because Gary Wayne Parris, 39, of Grass Valley, already has spent nearly six months in jail, the sentence would effectively be 2 1/2 years. Parris was also found legally insane, and Sutter County Superior Court Judge Timothy Evans specified that Parris should serve his sentence in Atascadero State Hospital. The fire covered 34,000 acres and burned about 200 homes.
