Fire swept through an old five-story apartment building in the town of Belfort in eastern France, killing 14 people and injuring 10, fire officials said. Four people died when they jumped from windows during the pre-dawn blaze. The 10 others died from burns or asphyxiation as a result of the smoke that engulfed the corridors, the officials said. Firefighters took more than two hours to put out the blaze in the town near the Swiss border.
