Rear Adm. W. Ivan Lewis Jr., who assumed command of the San Diego Naval Base last August, will retire in July after 35 years in the Navy. Lewis served briefly as commander of the Naval Training Center in San Diego before moving to the post at the Naval Base.

Rear Adm. John W. Adams, commander of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Wing of the Pacific Fleet, based on North Island, will take over the post. Adams was born in Camden, N.J., grew up in Kokomo, Ind., and entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954.

Adams will be replaced at North Island by Rear Adm. Luther F. Schriefer, now assigned to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington.
