Fullerton Stops Perry, SDSU in Tournament

Chana Perry was held to 10 points as San Diego State lost to Cal State Fullerton, 68-60, in the first round of the Big West Conference women’s basketball tournament Thursday afternoon at Cal State Long Beach.

Perry entered the tournament second in scoring in the Big West with a 23.7 average. Julie Evans led SDSU (23-8) with 16 points.

Cathy Werth led Fullerton (21-7) with 22 points, and Gena Miller added 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Fullerton never trailed, leading, 40-30, at halftime and by as many as 20 in the second half.

SOFTBALL

Clutch hits by Julie Caldwell and Kristin Maceranka led host San Diego State to a doubleheader sweep of Hawaii, 2-1 and 5-4.

Caldwell homered with one out in the bottom of the seventh in Game 1 to snap a 2-2 tie. In the second game, Maceranka singled home two runs with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh.

BASEBALL

Long Beach State scored in four of the first six innings and went on to an 11-1 victory over host U.S. International University.

Kevin Tahan hit a bases-empty home run for USIU (8-13) in the fourth. Jeff Oswalt (1-4) was the loser.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The University of San Diego’s Candida Echeverria has been named to the All-West Coast Athletic Conference first team. Echeverria led the Toreras in scoring and rebounding with 13.9 points and 6.5 rebounds. Rochelle Lightner, who averaged 9.4 points and 5.6 rebounds, was honorable mention. Lynda Jones, who played at Mt. Carmel, was named to the all-freshman team.

MEN’S TENNIS

Chris Belloli won at No. 3 singles and then teamed with Sig Huber to win at No. 1 doubles, but UC San Diego lost to Western Michigan, 7-2.

Belloli defeated Carl Krauter, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, and Belloli and Huber defeated Greg Winchester and Eric Schmid, 6-2, 6-3.

UCSD is 3-7 and Western Michigan is 4-4.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego (10-3) won its fifth consecutive match, shutting out visiting Western Michigan, 9-0. Jennifer Larking defeated Western Michigan’s Kathleen Meyer, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. At No. 1 doubles, Larking and Aby Brayton defeated Meyer and Stephanie Schulte, 6-4, 6-4.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

UC San Diego is second after the first day of the NCAA Division III women’s swimming championships in South Bend, Ind. Kenyon leads with 203 points, and UCSD is second with 96.
