A Greek Garden God

The Getty Museum in Malibu is known for its priceless collection of ancient Greek statues. But farther out in Malibu is another collection of Greek gods, goddesses and sphinxes imported to decorate your garden or home.

Made from molds of original ancient statues in Greek museums, these authentic statues include Neptune, Harp Girl, Amalphia, the Goddess of Ira, and Athena, protector of Athens.

One of the most intriguing is the sphinx, a legendary creature with a lion’s body and female upper torso. In mythology, the sphinx was the offspring of two giants, and she terrorized people by demanding the answer to this riddle: What has one voice, yet becomes four-footed and two-footed and three-footed? Anyone answering incorrectly was devoured by the sphinx.

Along with these beautifully crafted and weatherproof statues are white marble columns (perfect to display potted plants) made from the same Mt. Pedeli marble used for the Parthenon. The prices range from $100 for the columns to $1,800 for the largest statues.

The exclusive distributor of these Greek imports is Malibu Garden Center at the corner of Trancas Canyon Road and Pacific Coast Highway in north Malibu--where you might also find the answer to the sphinx riddle.
