College Roundup : Staton’s Two Homers Power Fullerton Past USIU, 10-2

Dave Staton hit two home runs and Paul Bunch hit one to help Cal State Fullerton to 10-2 nonconference baseball victory over United States International University Saturday at Titan Field.

Staton, a junior designated hitter from Orange Coast, hit a two-run home run in the first inning and a solo shot in the fifth. Staton, who missed the first week of the season with a rib injury, leads Fullerton with four home runs.

Rex Peters, a senior first baseman, had two hits, including an RBI single in the first to extend his hitting steak to 19 games for Fullerton (13-6). Peters’ single scored Mate Borgogno, who had doubled to lead off the inning.

Danny DeVille (2-0) worked the first five innings to get the victory. USIU is 8-15.

In a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader:

Southern California 3-1, Azusa Pacifica 1-7--Jim Dedrick allowed five hits over seven innings for the victory in the first game. Mike Slagle had an RBI single in the third, Paul Plyler walked with the bases in the same inning and Denny Berni hit a solo home run in the fifth for host SCC (10-10, 1-1).

Joe Gallardo pitched a nine-hitter for Azusa Pacific in the second game.

In a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game:

UC Riverside 4, Chapman 3--Ken Briggs hit a home run and had two RBIs for Chapman in the loss at Hart Park. UC Riverside scored twice in the eighth on a Chapman error to take a 5-4 lead.

In the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Assn. Basketball Western Regional Final:

Southern California College 89, Christian Heritage 88--Kyle Lundy made two free throws with 11 seconds left to give SCC the victory. Terry Scrugg and Jeff Bickmore scored 21 points each for SCC (29-4).

Jim Mansfield and John Mounce added 12 each, Todd Dixon 11 and Lundy 11 for SCC, which advances to the finals at Chattanooga, Tenn., next week.
