Dean Shoots 71 to Help USD Take Lead in Golf

Geoffrey Dean shot a one-under par 71 Monday as host University of San Diego took a two-shot lead over Pepperdine after the first round of the USD Invitational at the Carmel Mountain Ranch golf course.

Dean has a one-shot lead over Mike Murphy of Pepperdine in the individual standings. USD shot a first-round team total 303. Cal State Northridge is third at 311, and U.S. International University is fourth at 312.

SAILING

Mark Reynolds of San Diego finished third in the second race of the 62nd Bacardi Cup Series for Star Class sailboats on Biscayne Bay in Miami.

Reynolds, who won a silver medal in the event at the 1988 Olympics, maintained the overall lead after winning the opening race. Peter Wright of Chicago, who won the second race, was second overall and defending champion Ed Adams of Newport, R.I., was third.

HIGH SCHOOL

Kara Warner, a 5-foot-9 middle blocker for Mt. Carmel High School, has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Virginia. Warner, who was an All-Palomar League basketball player, missed half her senior season because of to illness. Warner is the ninth player from the San Diego Volleyball Club to receive a scholarship this season.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Sondra Mitchell defeated Gina Goblirsch, 6-3, 6-3, as San Diego State defeated North Carolina, 8-1, in a nonconference match at SDSU. The Aztecs (7-5) clinched the victory in singles with a 5-1 advantage.
