San Diego pianist Brian Verhoye took first place in the Carmel Music Society’s 13th annual music competition March 11. Verhoye’s $2,000 prize included a recital performance with the second- and third-place winners in Carmel’s Sunset Theater the evening of the competition. Verhoye edged out seven other finalists with a program of Bach, Chopin and Ginastera. The 27-year-old pianist studied with Daniel Pollack and Malcolm Hamilton of USC. In February, 1986, Verhoye tied for first place in San Diego State University’s Joseph Fisch Piano Competition.
