The State : Teen Rescues Baby in Canal
A 14-year-old girl jumped into a swift-flowing Fresno canal to save a toddler who had been swept almost three blocks, firefighters said. “I thought the baby was dead. I just got him anyway,” the girl, Molly Hernandez, told firefighters after she managed to get 2-year-old Jose Alvarez to the canal bank. He was treated by paramedics and taken to Valley Medical Center in stable condition. Molly’s mother, who cannot swim, called her out of the house to help after two men saw the child fall into the water and ran along the bank shouting.
