Legislation to set a uniform poll-closing time on presidential Election Day in the Lower 48 states was approved on a voice vote by the House Administration Committee on Wednesday and sent to the full House.

Rep. Al Swift (D-Wash.), sponsor of the bill, said he expects the House to approve it in early April. Under the bill, polls on Election Day when the presidency is at stake would close at 9 p.m. EST. In the Pacific time zone, daylight-saving time would be extended to allow polls to close at 7 p.m. PDT.
