Birdie on Final Hole Gives Martha Nause a 66 and One-Stroke Lead in Tucson Open

Martha Nause sank a birdie putt on the 18th hole Thursday for a six-under-par 66 and a one-stroke in the opening round of the $300,000 Tucson Open golf tournament.

Nause, who won her first event in 11 years on the Ladies Professional Golf Assn. circuit in 1988, described her round on the 6,243-yard Randolph North course as her “steadiest” ever.

Missie Berteotti and Penny Hammel shared second place at 67.

Defending champion Laura Davies of Britain, Jan Stephenson, Vicki Fergon and Cindy Mackey were another shot back.

Eight golfers, including Nancy Lopez, Patty Sheehan and Trish Johnson, were at 69.
