Local News in Brief : Laguna Hills : March 30 Is Deadline for Candidates to File

Residents of the proposed city of Laguna Hills have until March 30 to file petitions to run as city council candidates when the cityhood issue goes before voters June 6.

Council members will run for election at the same time voters consider the proposed incorporation of Laguna Hills. Those interested in one of the five council seats must obtain nominating petitions from the county registrar of voters and return it with at least 20 signatures of registered voters in that area by March 30.

Meanwhile, the last day to file ballot arguments for or against the incorporation of Laguna Hills is Monday at the registrar of voters office, 1300-C, S. Grand Ave., Santa Ana. Any registered voter or citizens’ group entitled to vote on the measure may submit a ballot argument of 300 words or less.

If approved, Laguna Hills, wedged between Interstate 5 on the east and the Aliso Viejo planned community on the west, would become the county’s 29th city. It would have about 45,000 residents on 6,000 acres. The private Leisure World community of 21,000 people would form the geographic core of the new city.
