School Police
May I call your attention to “Stabbed Teacher’s Plan to Get Tough Told,” Metro, March 8?
How many readers noticed, as I did, the strange contradiction between school board President Roberta Weintraub’s statement, “. . . Schools in her area for months have been ‘desperate’ for more school police. . . . ‘We just don’t have the money,’ ” and the statement of fact, “The district has 302 sworn police officers. Of these, 143 are assigned to schools.”
I cannot but wonder what over 50% of the school police are doing, if they are not assigned to schools. I mean, school teachers are assigned to schools. Shouldn’t school police be assigned to police schools?
Give us a break, Roberta. “. . . Don’t have the money,” indeed!
