The Buena Park City Council unanimously approved 3-year labor contracts with its Police and Fire departments that call for raises of 5% in the first year, city officials said Tuesday.

Under terms of the contract approved unanimously by the five-member council Monday night, employees will receive a 5% increase over base salary retroactive to Nov. 1, 1988, said Lawrence Temple, director of the Department of Administrative Services.

In the last 2 years of the contract, firefighters’ and police officers’ pay will be increased to equal the median salaries paid by 10 cities in Orange and Los Angeles counties to their police and fire departments, Temple said. But that increase cannot exceed 6% in the third year of the contract.

Temple said the 10 cities are comparable to Buena Park in size, structure and population. He said a majority of the members of the Buena Park fire and police associations have endorsed the contracts and he expects them to be signed shortly.
