The California Highway Patrol is investigating a traffic accident Tuesday that killed a Navy warship crewman.
Jerry Maroon, a petty officer third class assigned to the destroyer Cushing, was one of three sailors in a pickup truck headed north on Proctor Valley Road at 10:20 p.m. Monday, authorities said.
The CHP said the driver, Jorge L. Perelpa, 24, of Chula Vista, lost control of the truck about 2 1/2 miles south of San Miguel Road. The truck rolled and ejected Maroon.
A Navy spokesman would not identify the third man but said he and the driver were treated at the Balboa Navy Hospital on Tuesday and released.
An autopsy for Maroon is scheduled today, Deputy Coroner Chuck Bolton said.
