East side, west side, all around the town of Lakewood there will be movies.

A six-screen theater that seats 2,000 people was opened this week by United Artists at the site of an old shopping center on the western edge of Lakewood at South Street and Palo Verde Avenue. It is the first United Artists theater to open in the area since the Los Cerritos Twin opened 12 years ago.

On the east side of the city, at the corner of Carson Street and Paramount Boulevard, Pacific Theaters is proposing an eight-theater complex. There is a bowling alley on the site now and Pacific wants to renovate and expand that, in addition to building the theaters, said Don Waldie, director of public information for Lakewood. The Pacific proposal, he said, is being reviewed by the city.
