Boxer Guydell Williams of Jackson, Tenn., has died at the Medical University of South Carolina, three days after he collapsed after taking part in two fights on the same day at a Myrtle Beach Convention Center tournament.
Williams had already lost one bout last Wednesday before he substituted for another boxer in the last fight of the 11-bout event.
Bruce Mathes of the U.S. Amateur Boxing Federation said it is a violation for a boxer to participate in two fights in a single day during a club event such as the Myrtle Beach tournament. The federation is waiting for full documentation on the event before deciding on any action, he said.
Williams, a senior at Central-Merry High School in Jackson, was the defending West Tennessee and Mid-South Golden Gloves champion at 125 pounds.
