The New York Yankees acquired designated hitter-first baseman Steve Balboni from the Seattle Mariners Monday for minor-league pitcher Dana Ridenour.

Balboni, once a top Yankee prospect, has 147 career homers in eight major league seasons and is a lifetime .231 hitter. He won $800,000 in a salary arbitration hearing this winter. Released by the Royals last May, Balboni signed with Seattle and finished strongly, ending the year with 23 home runs and 66 runs batted in. The Yankees were looking for right-handed power since outfielder Dave Winfield underwent back surgery last week.
